Entry Requirements:
Candidates should have:
(a) a Master of Science degree in Food Science/Food Technology/Nutritional Science/Dietetics/Food Toxicology/Food Microbiology/Food Biotechnology / an appropriate zoology- or agricultural-related subject in Applied or Natural Science, or equivalent from a Hong Kong university, or equivalent; OR
(b) a Bachelor degree in Food Science/Food Technology/Nutritional Science/Dietetics/Food Toxicology/Food Microbiology/Food Biotechnology / an appropriate zoology- or agricultural-related subject in Applied or Natural Science, or equivalent, from a Hong Kong university, or equivalent, with two years’ relevant post-graduate experience [Note (1)] AND
(c) (i) Level 2 or above in Chinese Language and English Language in the Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education Examination (HKDSEE), or equivalent; or (ii) Level 2/Grade E or above in Chinese Language and English Language in the Hong Kong Certificate of Education Examination (HKCEE) [Note (2)], or equivalent.

Note:
(1) Counted from after obtaining relevant Bachelor degree; (2) For appointment purpose, ‘Grade E’ in Chinese Language and English Language (Syllabus B) in HKCEE before 2007 are accepted administratively as comparable to ‘Level 2’ in Chinese Language and English Language in the 2007 HKCEE and henceforth.

Duties:
(a) To assist the senior officers in reviewing, updating and recommending food safety standards, codes of practice and guidelines in relation to the latest development of international and national food standards and other jurisdictions;
(b) To conduct risk assessments for various food related hazards in supporting food safety control;
(c) To plan and conduct studies and researches on food safety concerning chemicals such as pesticide residues, metallic contaminants and harmful substances in food;
(d) To assist in developing, reviewing and updating food legislation and working out alternatives for legislative amendments; and supporting related public and trade consultations and technical meetings with the trade and other stakeholders;
(e) To liaise with the trade, academics, authorities, international organisations, other government departments and relevant stakeholders on food safety issues and provide professional input for government agencies and educational programmes for the public and other stakeholders;
(f) To provide professional and technical support for the work of Centre for Food Safety including conduction of daily surveillance for food incidents, technical support to food-related matters, preparation for technical guidance notes, technical briefs and Risk-in-briefs; and
(g) To perform any other duties as assigned by senior officers.

Terms of Appointment:
Successful candidates will be appointed on non-civil service contract terms for a period of not more than 12 months. Further employment may be offered at the absolute discretion of the Department, subject to operational need of the Department and satisfactory performance and conduct of the staff. [Successful candidates would be required to report for duty at short notice.]

Fringe Benefits
Rest days, statutory holidays, general holidays, annual leave, maternity/paternity leave, sickness allowance, where appropriate, will be granted in accordance with the provisions of the Employment Ordinance.

Gratuity (only applicable to appointee with contract of 12 months): A gratuity may be granted upon satisfactory completion of the contract with consistently high standard of performance and conduct. Such gratuity, if granted, plus any contribution made by the Government to a Mandatory Provident Fund (MPF) scheme in respect of the appointee as required by the MPF Schemes Ordinance, will be equal to 10% of the total basic salary drawn during the contract period.

(a) Candidates must be permanent residents of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region at the time of appointment unless specified otherwise.

(g) Holders of academic qualifications other than those obtained from Hong Kong institutions/Hong Kong Examinations and Assessment Authority may also apply but their qualifications will be subject to assessments on equivalence with the required entry qualifications.
